°Chinese characters, one of the three main writing systems of
Japanese. Kanji were borrowed from the Chinese language in three waves, starting in the 5th century. There are two main ways of reading most characters, the
kun'yomi (Japanese reading,
???) and the
on'yomi (Chinese reading,
???). There may also be a
nanori or name reading that is used for people and places.
